ABB has launched a high-reliability motor aimed at process applications where long running hours are common - and downtime costs are high. The high-efficiency M3000 motor incorporates has a 20-30% larger cooling surface than ABB`s previous generation machines, doubling the operational life of its bearings and windings.
Around 70% of motor failures are due to bearing failures. ABB argues that with the improved cooling, the bearing grease will last longer and that failures will be reduced. The motor`s high efficiency will reduce winding temperatures and cut the incidence of winding failures which are responsible for 20% of motor failures.
ABB believes that process industry users will be prepared to pay a premium for the improved performance of the new machines.
"In recent years, motor manufacturers have tended to economise on materials to save costs," says Steve Ruddell, general manager of ABB`s electrical machines business in the UK. "This motor bucks that trend and is aimed at discerning users who have realised that better quality motors demand a higher purchase price, but cost significantly less in the long run."
The process industry motors are available in IEC frame sizes 12-400, covering ratings from 4-710kW. Up to frame size 132, aluminium enclosures are used; for larger machines, cast-iron enclosures are standard.
