Cables arrive before the drive
ABB is already announcing enhancements to its new ACS 800 generation of mainstream drives. At the recent Hanover Fair, it unveiled a new method of connecting motor and power supply cables to a drive, designed to save time and money.
The cables are connected into a separate pedestal that is bolted to the floor. Once the cabling is completed, the drive is simply wheeled over the pedestal which fits into the base of the drive. Using this system, it is possible to install and test the pedestal before the drives are delivered so that they slot into position immediately for commissioning. The drive can also be removed at any time without having to disconnect the cables.
In keeping with the rest of the ACS 800 family, the new member, known as the ACS 800-2, is extremely compact. ABB claims that it is the narrowest AC drive in the 90-500kW range, being one-sixth of the width of some of its rivals. Versions from 90-160kW are 250mm wide, while those from 200-500kW are 350mm wide. Like other members of the ACS 800 family, the drive can be installed either in a conventional "bookshelf" direction, or sideways to give a shallow mounting depth.
