Leading figures set to appear at Talking Industry Live

03 April, 2023

The final seminar programme for the Talking Industry Live event taking place at the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry on April 25, has now been released. The free one-day event organised in partnership with the MTC, will provide an environment for delegates to learn about cutting-edge technologies and best practice through panel discussions, presentations, live demonstrations and workshops.

An informal, interactive keynote address by Mike Hague-Morgan, executive director of Autocraft Solutions Group, and Dr Megan Ronayne, head of industrial technologies and manufacturing at Innovate UK KTN, will set the tone for the event. Together they will explore how a leading OEM manufacturer and assembler of IC engines and EV batteries transitioned from being a traditional manufacturer using hand tools and paper, to a high-technology company with world-class quality, repeatability and digital traceability, helping the company to boost its turnover from £7m to £70m.

There will be three 45-minute-long panel discussions spread across the day. Audience participation will be encouraged, and questions will be taken.

Panellists for the first session on Robotics and Automation will include: Mike Wilson, chief engineer, automation, High Value Manufacturing (HVM) Catapult and chief automation officer at the MTC; David Dearden, managing director of Euchner UK; and Alan Sheppard, managing director of the LCA Group. They will discuss how to tackle challenges such as labour shortages and supply chains weaknesses by adopting robotics and automation, and how to accelerate this adoption and develop a competitive UK manufacturing sector.

Increasing OEE through Digital Manufacturing will be the focus of the second panel discussion. Sam Kirby, industrial IT specialist at Novotek; Steve Cartwright, chief engineer for technology, digital engineering at the MTC; Duncan Stanton, managing director of Lamonde Automation; and Luke Walsh, managing director of Brainboxes, will look at how OEE can be improved through straightforward measures. They will also look at hidden downtime that mounts up and causes cycle times to drift, and how to interpret and visualise existing data and unlock new data.

The third panel discussion will focus on Industrial Data and Artificial intelligence. Eric Topham, CEO and data science director at T-Dab; Mostafizur Rahman, technical specialist for AI and data science informatics at the MTC; and Stuart McLeod, the MTC’s technology manager for digital engineering, will discuss how AI and machine learning offer opportunities for increasing business performance, agility, and growth, focusing on the current state of AI in manufacturing, and the challenges and barriers to adoption.

Running alongside the panel discussions will be a series of six 45-minute seminars including presentations on: Why condition monitoring? Why not? by Vincent Burson from IFM; Mobile Robotics: Mobile, flexible & resilient – The factory of the future by Mike Payne of KUKA; Additive Manufacturing: Automated 3D Printing by Luke Rogers from AI Build; Collaborative Automation: Solving the UK Productivity Puzzle by Barry Graham from Omron; Prepare for the Future Today by Nikesh Mistry of Gambica; and What is Made Smarter? The benefits of adopting digital technology within your business by Jim Vithanage from the Made Smarter initiative.

There will also be two in-depth workshops. Euchner UK will offer a session will be on Managing equipment safety and cybersecurity in the modern factory. Rittal/Eplan will cover Smarter panel-building. Workshop places are limited to 40 per session so pre-registration is advised.

The Talking Industry Live event will offer a mix of panel discussions, presentations, demonstrations and workshops
