Tim Marks wins lifetime award for AEMT contributions

30 November, 2021

Tim Marks, former secretary and president of the AEMT (the Association of Electrical and Mechanical Trades), has been presented with a lifetime contribution award at the Association’s annual award ceremony, held recently in Coventry, UK. He was described as “the person who has probably put more work into the AEMT than anyone else in the history of the organisation, except maybe the founders”.

Marks served on the AEMT council in the 1980s and was the organisation’s president twice in the 1990s. At the turn of the millennium, he became AEMT secretary on a part-time basis, which soon became a full-time job. He was convenor of the standards committee which brought a new and overhauled repair standard for rotating machinery. Tim’s son, Thomas, succeeded him and is now the AEMT’s secretary and general manager.

About 200 people attended the awards ceremony which had been postponed from its original 2020 date as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. The other winners of the 2021 awards were:

Product of the year: Menzel Motors’ IP67 motors, developed for remote water pumping stations where accidental flooding can occur. Although the motors cannot operate while underwater because of their external fans, they can be started as soon as the flooding subsides.

Project of the year: Fletcher Moorland for finding a way for the online retail giant, Amazon, to repair and re-use circuit boards on its iBot warehouse-picking robots. Previously, if a PCB failed, it had to be thrown away and replaced with a new one. In less than 12 months, Fletcher Moorland has repaired more than 600 iBot boards, saving money and cutting waste.

Service centre of the year: ADC Electrical

Supplier of the year: Preformed Windings, the Rotherham-based manufacturer of high-voltage coils and armature coils. This award was sponsored by Drives & Controls.

Contribution to skills and training: EMiR Software, which developed an online learning platform in response to the pandemic, consisting of 10 modules that allow users to log in anywhere and at any time, to optimise their skills and training levels. There are now more than 100 users and 150 certificates have been issued.

Rising star: Jack Rowe of Fletcher Moorland, who took on the role of the company’s workshop manager who was absent due to illness, to manage engineers and to identify potential improvements that would contribute to a more efficient workplace.

Diversity in engineering: Awarded jointly to Central Group and Heasell Electromechanical Services.

The call for nominations for the 2022 AEMT awards will open in the spring of 2022.
