SKF is selling 450 machines as it shuts Stonehouse UK site

27 October, 2021

More than 450 production machines and other items of plant are being auctioned at SKF’s Stonehouse bearing manufacturing site in the UK as its prepares to shut down by the end of the year. SKF announced the closure of the factory in 2018 as part of a programme to consolidate its production of aerospace components in Europe, with production moving to sites in Italy and France. At the time, 185 people worked at the site.

The industrial auction house Surplex is selling 450 items of equipment from the Gloucestershire plant, including grinding machines, double turret lathes, vibratory deburring machines and CNC band saws. The auction ends on 2 November, 2021.

Announcing the closure of the Stonehouse site in December 2018, Bernd Stephan, president of SKF’s Automotive and Aerospace business, said that the move was needed “to secure a continued competitive offering for the aerospace industry as it shifts away from legacy engines and aircraft to more modern ones. We will be able to make better use of more modern machines and manufacturing technologies at our sites in other parts of Europe.”
