Atlas Copco adds Perceptron to Isra to boost vision division

29 September, 2020

Atlas Copco is buying the US automated metrology supplier Perceptron for $68.9m in cash and plans to add it to its newly created machine vision division, which it formed after buying the German machine vision specialist Isra Vision for $1.19bn earlier this year.

Perceptron, headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan, specialises in automated 3D measurement, robot guidance and coordinate measuring systems. It has around 300 employees, and in the fiscal year 2020 it generated revenues worth $62.3m.

“Flexible automation and in-line quality control on the production line are two strong trends where we want to support our customers in their transition towards digital manufacturing”, says Henrik Elmin, president of Atlas Copco’s Industrial Technique business. “Through Perceptron’s position in automated metrology and robot guidance, together with the recent acquisition of Isra Vision, we are creating a strong offering in machine vision solutions and extending the smart factory automation business.

“The acquisition of Perceptron will enable us to increase our customers’ productivity through best-in-class quality control and an increased automation level”, Elmin adds. “Perceptron has almost 40 years of experience as a leading global provider of 3D automated measurement solutions. There are several identified synergies in sales, operations, service and technology development from Perceptron joining the Machine Vision Solutions division.”

Subject to approval by Perceptron shareholders, customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2020.

One of Perceptron's specialities is 3D guidance systems for robots

Atlas Copco, Sweden’s most valuable listed company, employs about 39 000 people and generated revenues of around €10bn in 2019.
