Free AR smartphone app visualises robotic installations

10 September, 2020

ABB has announced an AR (augmented reality) app for smartphones and tablets that offers a quick and easy way of visualising where and how robotic automation can fit into production processes. The RobotStudio AR viewer can be used to test models created in ABB’s PC-based RobotStudio programming suite, enabling users to get an idea of the size and scale of a robot or robot cell and how it could be deployed on a factory floor to fit around existing production equipment.

Using AR, the app overlays a visualisation of a robotic installation onto the real-life production environment. It can vary the size of the visualisation and rotate it to achieve the required views.

The app allows users to watch the model in action. A timeline function can be used to check the cycle time, and to jump to a certain point in time in the animation, helping to find ways of enhancing performance or pinpointing possible issues.

Available free-of-charge on the Apple Store and Google Play Store, and viewable on any compatible smart device (iPhone, iPad Pro, or Android 7.0 onwards with ARCore support), the app provides a low-cost, safe way of visualising an installation. It can be used by individuals or groups, without the complexity, hygiene or nausea that can occur with VR-based alternatives.

The AR Viewer is said to be ideal for users that are new to robotic automation, or for those who have previously lacked the time or resources to plan an installation.

ABB’s free augmented reality app can help users decide whether a robot is right for their application

“We know from conversations with SMEs, in particular, that many companies are looking to implement some form of robotic automation but are unsure of where to start,” says ABB Robotics’ head of product management, Antti Matinlauri. “RobotStudio is our intuitive digital tool that helps simplify the installation and use of robots.

“Our new AR Viewer tool makes it even easier for customers to access the huge capability of RobotStudio, helping them to see how robots can be introduced into their production and how automation can improve the productivity and flexibility of existing process, before they commit to any investment,” he adds.

ABB’s RobotStudio can be used to design, configure and commission individual robots or complete robot systems in a virtual environment, allowing systems to be tested and refined before they are implemented in real life. New product lines can be installed faster and ramped up without surprises during commissioning.

The RobotStudio software is available free-of-charge until 31 December, 2020 with a free training course available to help users to unlock its potential.
