$140m funding round is ‘biggest ever’ for industrial robotics

13 September, 2018

GreyOrange, a Singapore-headquartered business which specialises in AI-powered robotics systems for flexible automation in warehouses and fulfilment centres, claims to have attracted the largest round of funding ever raised by an industrial robotics company. The company will use the $140m of funds from Mithril Capital to develop the next generation of flexible supply-chain systems.

GreyOrange designs, manufactures and deploys robotics systems that automate distribution and fulfilment centres. Founded in 2011, it now has operations and r&d centres in India and Singapore, offices in Japan and Germany, and has recently established a US headquarters and manufacturing facility in Atlanta and an r&d centre in Boston. One of its backers is Mitsubishi.

The company’s technologies include an AI-enabled autonomous robot called Butler, which moves racks of items weighing up to 1,600kg to operators. It is also designed to optimise the supply chain from inventory storage and replenishment to order picking. There is also a robot called PickPal that combines AI with machine vision to “revolutionise” automated fulfilment, working with the Butler to accelerate picking processes dramatically.

The new funds will allow GreyOrange to develop and deploy intuitive, flexible and scalable systems for end-to-end automation across the supply chain, from factories to fulfilment centres, and beyond. It plans to expand its operations in Europe, Asia and the US.
