Schneider invests €65m to boost its presence in Singapore

19 October, 2015

Schneider Electric has announced plans to invest around €65m over the next few years to expand its operations in Singapore. It plans to establish a new East Asia headquarters, a software development and demonstration centre, and a control centre for network logistics, analytics and transportation.

Schneider’s new East Asia headquarters will oversee its operations as far away as Taiwan and Mongolia. It will be led by Tommy Leong, who has held several senior leadership positions in the Asia-Pacific region and China.

The new software centre, the first of its kind for Schneider, will develop software to solve issues in industry, and will include a Customer Experience Center, showcasing the software. It is being supported by Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB), and is expected to employ more than 60 research scientists and engineers by the time it reaches peak capacity in 2018.

“Singapore is a key knowledge and innovation hub in the Asia-Pacific region,” says Schneider’s chairman and CEO, Jean-Pascal Tricoire. “By basing our Software Industry Solutions Center and Software Regional Hub in Singapore, we want to take advantage of the country’s research capabilities and competitive ecosystem. We also value Singapore’s strong protection of intellectual property. This is an ideal location to set up our new solutions centre that will address the challenges that the cloud and data centre industry faces in Asia.”

Schneider’s existing logistics and network design team in Singapore will be expanded to handle regional control tower activities for logistics and network design, data analytics and global transportation. It will address supply chain optimisation in the region and beyond.

Tricoire: Protecting intellectual property

Tricoire says Schneider’s expansion will support Singapore with energy management, automation and software technologies, “helping make it an exemplary smart city with smart industries and smart data centres”.

EDB chairman Dr Beh Swan Gin, says that Schneider’s investment “re-affirms Singapore’s position as the leading controls and automation centre in Asia”. The company’s new regional headquarters and supply chain management functions “are also testament to Singapore’s position as the hub for international companies to orchestrate their market growth in the region,” he adds.

Schneider has been active in Singapore since the 1970s, initially as the Telemecanique Far East Co. It was renamed Schneider Electric in the 1990s.
