Three-channel encoders are ‘the world’s smallest’

Avago Technologies claims to have developed the world’s smallest three-channel reflective optical encoders, for use in miniature, low-power motion control systems. The AEDR-87xx devices are aimed at applications such as stepper motors, actuators, piezoelectric drives and portable medical appliances.

The encoders offer a resolution up to 318 lines per inch and support 3.3V and 5V supply voltages. Dual analogue outputs can interface directly with external interpolators for precision motion control. Digital output versions are also available with built-in 4x, 8x and 16x interpolation.

“Reflective optical encoder technology is vital to many miniaturised motion control systems,” says Hassan Hussain, Avago vice-president and general manager of its motion control product division. “As modern appliances get smaller in size and consume less power, so too are the critical components such as a motion control encoder embedded inside many of these appliances.”

The encoders measure 3.95 x 3.4 x 0.956 mm. Prices start at $15 in 10,000-piece quantities
