Chinese automation firm buys Applied Motion Products

16 June, 2014

The Chinese automation manufacturer, Shanghai Moons’ Electric Co, has acquired the US stepper and servo drive producer, Applied Motion Products, for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition is an expansion of a joint venture that began in 2007 with AMP and Moons’ sharing technology and R&D.

Moons’, which claims to be the world’s fourth-largest manufacturer of hybrid stepper motors, with annual revenues of more than $200m, says that no changes are planned in the day-to-day running of Applied Motion Products, except that it will now report to its new owner in China.

“Our acquisition of Applied Motion Products complements our overall product offering of stepper, servo, brushless DC motors by providing enhanced drives and software,” explains Moons’ president, James Chang. “This investment represents an important strategic opportunity to offer complete motion solutions for our customers in North America and globally.”

“We are pleased to see Applied Motion Products become part of the Moons’ team,” adds AMP president, Don Macleod. “In a globally competitive marketplace, the combination of Applied Motion Products brand and leading-edge motion technology, with Moons’ broad product offering, world-class manufacturing capability and resources, provides us with a sustainable competitive advantage.”

Applied Motion Products' headquarters are located in California

Applied Motion Products, based in Watsonville, California, was founded in 1978 and specialises in advanced stepper and servo motor drives.

Shanghai Moons’ Electric Company was founded in 1994 and produces stepper motors, BLDC motors, servomotors and motor drives.
