IP67 integrated stepper drive supports EtherNet/IP

30 September, 2013

US-based Advanced Micro Controls (AMCI) has released an integrated stepper motor, drive and controller with IP67 protection and rugged M12 connectors.

The M12 connectors avoid the vulnerability associated with RJ-45 connections in industrial environments where cable flex and contaminants can cause problems. The connectors provide IP50 protection as standard, with IP67 as an option for washdown environments such as those found in food and beverage manufacturing, industrial rinses, and other harsh conditions.

The SMD23E three-in-one integrated motion control package simplifies installation and reduces cabling. It communicates with a host controller (PLC or PAC) via EtherNet/IP or Modbus-TCP, and can be programmed using the same software as is used to configure the PLC/PAC, avoiding the need to learn new software or programming languages.

The package is ODVA-conformance-tested and interfaces with many PLCs including those from Rockwell Automation, Omron, and Schneider. “The PLC integration provides flexibility that simplifies machine changeovers and reduces set-up times,” says Matt Tellier, AMCI’s motion control product manager.

AMCI's three-in-one stepper motor-drive can be protected to IP67

“The SMD23E makes motion control affordable for a wide range of applications,” he adds. “We see many applications where a manual adjustment, or a pneumatic cylinder would have been selected; however it can now be implemented simply, and in a cost-effective manner with the SMD23E.”

The package is based on a high-torque Nema frame 23 stepper motor with a 3.4A DC-powered microstepping drive. An optional encoder can be added for move verification.
