Awards will recognise skills achievements in the UK
Semta, the employer-led organisation that fosters skills in engineering, manufacturing and science in the UK, has announced plans for an awards scheme that will recognise the achievements of people, businesses and training partners across the sector.
“Britain’s engineers are still the best in the world – and we will be putting them on the world stage to take a bow,” says Semta CEO, Sarah Sillars. “The Semta skills awards will shine the spotlight on those scaling great heights in modern Britain – with the aim of inspiring the generation to do so in the future.”
The awards will be judged by an industry-led panel who will also select an overall winner of the Best of British Engineering Award. The awards categories include apprentices, skills champions, training partners, innovations and SME investments in skills. Sponsors include Siemens, BAE Systems, Rolls Royce, Atkins and Pera Training.

The inaugural awards will be presented at the event in London in February 2014. Semta plans to make them an annual event.
Semta represents 128,000 companies with a combined workforce of 1.66 million, which generate annual revenues of £309bn.
The UK will need 100,000 Stem (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) graduates per year during the period 2012–2020, but is producing only around 90,000 each year, including international students.
